UNILAG Postgraduate School Holds Staff Workshop, Retreat to Promote Professionalism and Service Excellence

The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, organised a One-Day Workshop and End-of-Year Retreat for members of staff, as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism, service delivery, and workplace efficiency.

The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, organised a One-Day Workshop and End-of-Year Retreat for members of staff, as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism, service delivery, and workplace efficiency.

Speaking at the event, the Dean of SPGS, Professor Abraham Osinubi, described the workshop as a deliberate move to reposition the School beyond routine administrative processes by nurturing the right attitudes, character, and mindset among staff. He reaffirmed his commitment to consolidating the School of Postgraduate Studies as a world-class, service-oriented academic centre.

Professor Osinubi explained that the workshop was designed to enhance participants’ soft skills in areas such as effective communication, emotional intelligence, ethical conduct, teamwork, time management, adaptability, and conflict resolution. According to him, these competencies are critical to improving service delivery and strengthening staff engagement with postgraduate students.

“This workshop has been designed to equip you not only with insights, but also with practical tools that you can apply in the discharge of your daily tasks as faces of this School,” he stated.

The workshop, themed Administration and Professionalism in the Workplace, was formally declared open by the University Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Victoria Abosede Wickliffe. In her address, Mrs. Wickliffe commended the choice of theme, noting that it aligns closely with her mission for the UNILAG Registry.

She outlined key measures for promoting administrative excellence and professionalism within the University and in formal work environments generally. The Registrar urged participants to recommit themselves to ethics, responsibility, and professionalism in the performance of their duties, while also emphasizing the importance of open-mindedness, continuous learning, fairness, cooperation, and collaboration among staff.

Facilitators at the workshop delivered presentations on critical aspects of professional conduct and administrative effectiveness. Dr. Adegboyega Ehinmowo, Immediate Past Sub-Dean of SPGS, spoke on Student Experience: The Role of Soft and Engagement Skills. Dr. Aliu Soyingbe, Acting Sub-Dean, SPGS, delivered a paper on Work Ethics: Enhancing Integrity and Building Lasting Trust, while Mr. Akinwunmi Abolade, Deputy Registrar and Director, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, UNILAG, spoke on Essential Skills for Effective University Professional Administrator.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of the winner of the School of Postgraduate Studies First Responder Award for 2025. The award was presented to Olaoluyinka Damilola Shoremekun, Senior Assistant Registrar, in recognition of her proactiveness, diligence, discretion, and initiative throughout the year.

The workshop and retreat concluded on a note of renewed commitment by staff to uphold professionalism, ethical standards, and excellence in service delivery at the School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Lagos.
