The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIRHub/aiRoL) at the University of Lagos recently concluded its Coding and Robotics Summer Boot Camp for the 2024 cohorts. The three-week program, which commenced on July 29, 2024, culminated in a vibrant closing ceremony held at the Afe Babalola Auditorium, on Friday, August 16, 2024.

The boot camp provided primary and high school students, aged 8 to 16, with exposure to cutting-edge techniques and essential skills necessary to thrive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Participants were grouped into teams of four based on their class, allowing them to showcase their acquired knowledge in AI and robotics.

During the closing ceremony, outstanding participants, volunteers, and tutors were recognized for their contributions. Parents, guardians, and well-wishers were treated to captivating presentations and demonstrations, highlighting the students’ grasp of artificial intelligence, coding, and robotics.

In her welcome remarks, Convener Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo emphasized the transformative impact of integrating AI and robotics education at an early age. She praised the program for not only enriching students’ understanding but also igniting a lasting interest in technology and innovation. The boot camp, organized by the University of Lagos through the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory (AIROL), allowed participants to express their creativity through conceptualization, design, and programming.

Dr. Yinka-Banjo expressed her delight, stating, “It has been an absolute pleasure watching these young talents dive into the world of artificial intelligence and robotics.” The University of Lagos remains committed to fostering technological excellence and community service through initiatives like the Coding and Robotics Summer Boot Camp.

Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, Convener of the boot camp, expressed her gratitude to the institution’s leadership, donors, volunteers, and tutors who supported the program. She emphasized the transformative impact of integrating AI and robotics education at an early age, sparking lasting interest in technology and innovation among the participants.

The closing ceremony featured distinguished speakers, including Professor Sunday Adebisi, Director of the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), and Dr. Olayinka Omowunmi Adewumi, Ag. Director of the Innovation and Technology Management Office (ITMO). Both speakers highlighted UNILAG’s efforts to reshape learning in line with modern-day realities, enriching lives through education.

Additionally, Mr. Femi Ositade, a young innovator and incoming first-year student at Harvard University, inspired the students with a pep-talk that delved into several areas of quantum computing. His insights encouraged the budding technologists to explore cutting-edge fields beyond the boot camp.

Organized annually by the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory (AIROL) at UNILAG, the Coding & Robotics Summer School for Junior and Secondary Schools Students continues to foster technological excellence. This year’s edition was held in partnership with Mr. Oluwakayode Adebowale, Executive Director and Founder of BLENDED LEARNING and Study Centre in the United States.
