Yishawu Calls for Parental Oversight on Social Media to Combat Exam Failures

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa Constituency 02 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has called on parents to monitor their children’s use of social media following recent mass failures in public examinations, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

During the 12th edition of his annual distribution of free JAMB forms to constituents at Ikoyi-Obalende, Yishawu highlighted the alarming 75 percent failure rate in this year’s JAMB exams. He stressed the crucial role parents play in guiding their children to avoid distractions from social media.

“Parents need to take a proactive approach to ensure that social media does not undermine their children’s academic performance,” Yishawu stated. “Without proper monitoring, children can easily be sidetracked by social media, leading to academic failure. It is essential that parents ensure their children focus on their studies to succeed in these exams.” He also noted how the COVID-19 pandemic has altered learning patterns, increasing online activities that require supervision to prevent distractions.

For many beneficiaries, the free GCE forms represent a second chance at success. Salami Oluwatoyin, a recipient, expressed gratitude to the lawmaker and promised to excel. Her mother, Mrs. Bose, was initially skeptical but pleasantly surprised by the initiative’s authenticity. Another beneficiary, Okoro Chukwuma, is hopeful that the free form will help him improve his results.

Mr. Adeola Ekemode, a parent, echoed Yishawu’s sentiments, advising beneficiaries to limit their time on social media and focus on acquiring skills that will benefit their future.
