Abia State Government Empowers Volunteers for School Deworming Project in Six Local Government Areas

The Abia State Government has empowered volunteers for an in-school deworming initiative in six local government areas (LGAs). Ifeoma Thomas, Special Assistant on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation, leads the initiative, targeting both public and private schools in selected LGAs.

The primary aim is to address health concerns among schoolchildren, especially in rural areas. Thomas highlighted the strategic selection of LGAs: Ohafia, Bende, Ikwuano, Isialangwa South, Obingwa, and Osisioma.

While the Ministry of Health typically focuses on ages 0 to 5 in deworming, this program caters to children aged 6 to 14. Thomas emphasized the government's commitment to serving vulnerable groups and expressed gratitude to partners, including the Governor's wife, Precilla Otti, civil society organizations, donor agencies, CARITORS, ANRIN, SOLINA, HSCL, and HOPE SPRING.

Gladys Ike, the acting Executive Secretary of the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, highlighted the training's goal to provide volunteers with a comprehensive understanding of the deworming exercise. Ike stressed the prevalence of worm infestation among children.

Co-facilitators Okorie Lawrence and Caroline Charles explained that trained volunteers would facilitate the deworming project in LGAs and train others. They urged volunteers to pay close attention during training, emphasizing their pivotal role in the initiative.

The program marks a significant stride by the Abia State government to promote the overall health and wellness of school-age children, ensuring a healthier and more robust future for the state.
