DELSU SIWES Directorate Holds One-Day Training, VC Urges Greater Commitment from Coordinators

The Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, recently held a one-day training workshop for Heads of Departments and Departmental Coordinators of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, urging participants to demonstrate greater commitment to their duties to ensure students fully benefit from the scheme.

The training, which took place on Wednesday, 6th August 2025 at the Dean’s Conference Room, Faculty of Education, Site III, was organised by the SIWES Directorate. The Vice Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo, commended the SIWES Directorate for maintaining high standards and for organising the programme to enhance staff performance before formally declaring it open.

In his welcome address, the Director of DELSU’s SIWES Directorate, Professor Sunday Efe, applauded the Heads of Departments and Coordinators for their contributions to the success of the scheme, noting that their efforts earned DELSU the “Best SIWES Directorate in Nigerian Universities” award for 2024 from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). He explained that the training was aimed at equipping participants with the skills needed to effectively manage SIWES operations.

The workshop featured several lectures by resource persons, including: “Staff Conduct with Industries and Students during IT” by DELSU Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio; “SIWES Administration” by Professor Sunday Efe; “Students Supervision and Mentorship in SIWES” by Professor Emmanuel Ndakara; “Assessment and Evaluation in SIWES (Methods and Tools)” by Professor Ignatius Njoseh; “SIWES Logbook Management (Tracking Students’ Progress)” by Mrs Angela Njoseh; “SIWES Report Writing” by Dr Alex Eyefia; “New SIWES Payment Platform and Registration Process” by Mr Sunny Otegbalor; and “Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving in SIWES” by the Deputy Director of SIWES, Dr Emmanuel Tonukari.

According to the organisers, the training aligns with the Vice Chancellor’s vision of promoting staff development and ensuring excellent service delivery across the university.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Vice Chancellor’s representative, Professor Edmund Atakpo; University Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufuoma Ufiofio; Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Ignatius Njoseh; SIWES Deputy Director, Dr Emmanuel Tonukari; Professor Emmanuel Ndakara; the University PRO, Mr Henry Eseka; as well as Heads of Departments and Coordinators involved in SIWES.
