Dellta State University, Abraka (DELSU), has been commended for being involved in the training of strategic human resource for the development of Delta State and Nigeria at large, Myschoolnews gathered.

The observation was made by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Andy Egwunyenga at the 12th Induction Ceremony/Oath- Taking of 68 Nurses and Midwives for the 2021/2022 academic session held on Thursday, July 13, 2023. According to the top University Administrator, “we have over the years  remained one of the strategic tertiary institutions, whose products are engaged at the core of the nation’s development agenda and we are very proud of this modest achievement”.

He commended the Delta State Government’s vision to enhance health care of all people living in Delta State through the development and promotion of policies like the Health Insurance Scheme, adding that those involved in the training of health care professionals “cannot sit on the fence but get actively involved by pulling resources together in order to produce adequate number of professionals in terms of the quality desired and the quantity demanded in  an efficient and effective manner.”

Professor Egwunyenga congratulated the inductees on their achievements “for blazing the trail to achieve success despite the numerous challenges you might have gone through.  You have demonstrated the act of showmanship and doggedness, having travailed through the thick and thin involved in your five-year training.”

He however, reminded the Fresh Nurses of the need to be ethical and embrace team work.  In his words, “In order to attain optimal health care and excel as professional, you need to collaborate with other Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists, Radiographers, Laboratory Scientists and Administrators, among others”. He advised the Nurses never to take undue advantage of the ignorant and vulnerable in the society but to always make their contributions to humanity  “as service to your maker with  whom your final responsibility lies.”

Presenting the inductees to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Professor Kingsley Nwangwa, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, made a case for increase in the number of students approved for the University, given its higher carrying capacity. According to him, only about 5 percent of those who applied to the Department of Nursing Sciences were offered admission, leaving a huge underutilized capacity.

While inducting the fresh graduates, the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Farouk Abubakar, represented by Mrs. Adekemi Awe, Director of Human Resources, congratulated them, noting that the Council was committed to maintaining standard and excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Education and Practice in Nigeria in line with global best practices. According to him, “the Bachelor of Nursing (B.N.Sc.) programme is a high standard educational programme designed to produce Nurses and Midwives who are equipped with requisite knowledge, clinical skills and professional intelligence to render safe and efficient health care to the populace."

He remarked that the induction was the beginning of their professional career as Nurses with “the privilege to practice anywhere you choose." He reminded the new Nurses of the need to adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession, adding that “you must therapeutically be assisting individuals, families and communities with diverse background of religion, culture, belief and social status to resolve their health issues/challenges.”

The occasion provided an opportunity to recognize hardwork as high achievers were given prizes. Top of the list was Miss Sodje Eferere, a first class graduate who emerged overall best and delivered a moving valedictory speech.
