DELSU VC, Professor Egwunyenga, Urges Fresh Students to Acquire Skills for Survival on Campus

The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) Professor Andy Egwunyenga has advised fresh students of the Diploma and Continuing Education Programme to acquire new skills in the areas of self-awareness, empathy, effective communication, time management and problem-solving in order to cope with the challenges of being in a University community.

The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) Professor Andy Egwunyenga has advised fresh students of the Diploma and Continuing Education Programme to acquire new skills in the areas of self-awareness, empathy, effective communication, time management and problem-solving in order to cope with the challenges of being in a University community.

The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Okoh, was speaking at the orientation programme of the Centre for Continuing Education held on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at the 750 Hall A Campus 3 where he urged them to do everything possible to quickly adjust to their new environment.

While congratulating the fresh students on their admission into the University, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the orientation exercise was put in place to help them integrate into the University system. “You need to adapt yourselves to the University environment with its privileges, rules and regulations so as to make a success of it”, he told the young students.

Citing Enenche (2022), the Professor of Parasitology and Public Health drew their attention to some facts of life which could help them to succeed. He stated that:

Welcoming guests and students of the programme which filled the hall, the Ag Director, Centre for Continuing Education Programmes, Dr. (Mrs) Callister Obi reminded the audience that DELSU was the best University in the South-South Zone and one of the best in the country, adding that the Vice-Chancellor and his team had put the University on the world map, hence the students should count themselves privileged to be admitted into DELSU.

She recalled that when she was appointed in April 2020, the Centre had only 324 students but in the intervening period, the student population had grown phenomenally to over 2,000 students in both the degree and diploma programmes, attributing the success to the support of the Vice-Chancellor and his management team.

Dr. (Mrs) Obi, an Associate Professor of Economics, also expressed appreciation to the former Chairman of the Board, Centre for Continuing Education Programmes, Professor (Mrs) Ebele Egwunyenga who laid down a workable plan for the success of the Centre. According to her, Professor (Mrs) Egwunyenga “had passion for the Centre, made great plans that would take it to the greatest height, but there was no enabling environment for her to execute her plans”. She explained that on assumption of office, she dusted up the blue print and executed it with astonishing results.

In order to give the students a useful orientation programme, the Centre lined up relevant topics including “Course Registration, Deferments, Temporary withdrawals and Late Registrations and their Implications” which was patiently and effectively handed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Ochuko Anomohanran, who advised the students to always carefully register their courses with the assistance of their course advisers.

Another important lecture was entitled “The use of DELSU Portal” delivered by the Director of ICT, Professor Ignatius Njoseh who took his time to educate the new students on the need to do the right thing at the right time, while the Registrar, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio, represented by the Deputy Registrar (Establishment), Mr. Emmanuel Okoro exposed the students to the rules and regulations of the University. Others senior academics spoke on different aspects of University life.
