In a recent press conference held in Enugu, Dr. Gabriel Ajah, Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), addressed allegations of unfair termination of employment concerning five teachers within the board. Dr. Ajah vehemently denied claims of arbitrary dismissals, emphasizing the board's unwavering commitment to due process and adherence to established disciplinary procedures.

The controversy arose following reports circulating on social media suggesting that Mrs. Ujunwa Onyia and four other teachers were unlawfully terminated from their positions due to their advocacy for an increase in teachers' minimum wage in the state. However, Dr. Ajah clarified that the dismissals were not linked to any wage-related activism but were instead a result of disciplinary actions based on misconduct and breach of regulations.

According to Dr. Ajah, the dismissed teachers had been formally queried and subsequently found to be in violation of various regulations, including misconduct, truancy, unauthorized absence from duty, and insubordination, among other infractions outlined in the Public Service Rules.

Highlighting the case of Mrs. Ujunwa Onyia, Dr. Ajah emphasized that her dismissal was one of several similar cases addressed during the board's recent meeting, indicating that the decision was part of a broader effort to maintain discipline and uphold standards within the education sector.

Dr. Ajah also underscored the Enugu State government's commitment to enhancing teachers' welfare, including the implementation of a N30,000 minimum wage for primary school teachers. He noted that Governor Peter Mbah had promptly approved and ensured the payment of the minimum wage, fulfilling a campaign promise aimed at improving teachers' conditions of service in the state.
