IAUE Staff Urged to Examine Conduct for Purposeful Development

The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, has called on staff to examine their conduct in service delivery as a means of driving purposeful development in the institution.

Speaking through the Associate Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Chibuzor Chile Nwobueze, during a meeting between Heads of Department and the Quality Assurance Unit, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of self-reflection in achieving the university’s mission and vision.

Professor Onuchuku expressed dismay at the lack of thorough reading and supervision of project work by some lecturers, as well as the practice of some teaching as many as five or six courses while leaving others with little or no workload, describing such behavior as “shameful.” He identified greed as a major cause of conflict and urged staff to be fair and kind to students, warning that the way students are treated today could determine the kind of support they may render in the future.

The Director of the Quality Assurance and Control Unit, Professor Levi Doe Kalagbor, outlined the unit’s responsibilities, which include:

  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Ensuring academic programmes meet National Universities Commission (NUC) standards
  • Assessing academic programmes for quality and compliance
  • Enforcing compliance with NUC accreditation standards and institutional policies

He further decried negative practices among staff, including failure to adhere to lecture and examination timetables, unofficial monetary demands from students, demands termed “entertainment,” awarding unmerited marks, selling textbooks outside course content and without departmental approval, withholding examination scripts and scores weeks after exams, and failure to align course outlines with actual course content.
