Niger state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed declared that “We must challenge traditional pedagogies, embrace emerging technologies, and cultivate an environment that nurtures creativity and critical thinking among both educators and students,” and accept the CL4STEM teaching and learning approach into schools’ curriculum.

The Commissioner spoke through Mr. Daniel Yisa Loguma  at the opening of a 3-days Connected Learning for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CL4STEM) 2023 international symposium which took place at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, and observed that innovation lies at the heart of effective STEM education.

Empowering teachers with professional development opportunities, access to cutting edge resources and collaborative platforms is one of the best tools to amplify the ability to inspire and prepare both teachers and students for the challenges of tomorrow, especially towards achieving global education standards.

The project global of, Connected Learning for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CL4STEM), 2023 International symposium, Prof. Nuhu George Obaje has acknowledged that the module is slow in having desired impact and widespread due in Nigeria to poor network and power supply especially in rural areas.

Declaring the event open, the Commissioner urged the participants drawn from within and outside the state to, “Share insights, and explore innovative approaches during this symposium, let us also remember our collective responsibility to shape the future of education”.

Meanwhile, the Project’s Global leader, Prof. Nuhu Obaje said the module can be offline and difficult to implement due to network or lack of power supply especially in rural communities.

Prof. Obaje however made a case for the blending of the CL4STEM teaching and learning approach into schools’ curriculum and said efforts were on to evolve strategies to overcome the challenges.

Obaje gave the names of Nigerian collaborators to the CL4STEM which was first introduced into Nigeria few years back to include Bayero University, Kano and Kaduna state university and Oyo state.

Among participants at the international symposium included the Oyo state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu who was represented by Mr. Idowu Adekunle, while Kano and Kaduna states also sent representatives.

It is also reported that resource persons from some foreign countries, including Tanzania and India presented papers on topical issues via zoom, during the symposium with theme: ‘Innovative Approaches to Stem Instruction and Teachers Capacity Building”.
