Nile University Students Represent Nigeria at Social Innovation Hub Programme in Japan

Nile University of Nigeria proudly celebrates the achievements of two of its student entrepreneurs, Abdul-Samad Lawal (400L Mechatronics Engineering) and David Oseloka Okoh (400L Business Administration), who recently returned from Japan after participating in the prestigious Social Innovator Hub (SIH) Programme.

The seven-week co-creation programme, hosted by Tohoku University and sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), brought together bright minds from across the globe, including Japan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Peru, and Mongolia, to develop innovative business solutions addressing pressing social challenges.

The two students, selected from Nile University’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub, represented Nigeria with their respective startups. Abdul-Samad Lawal’s project, “Synthetic Waste-to-Fibre,” focuses on transforming synthetic waste into reusable fibres, while David Oseloka Okoh’s “Green Char Solution” converts agricultural waste into biochar for sustainable agriculture and clean energy. Their projects were highly regarded for addressing critical environmental challenges.

During the programme, the students worked in teams with international peers, participating in workshops, co-creation sessions, and mentoring sessions to refine their business models and product designs. Both Abdul-Samad and David pitched their solutions to investors, gaining valuable insights into how to scale their ideas globally.

Reflecting on their experience, David Oseloka Okoh highlighted the critical role Nile University’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub played in their preparation. “The incubation programme gave us the technical and business skills to refine our startups, and without the guidance we received from Dr. Umar Ibrahim and Mrs. Binta Agbonika, we wouldn’t have been as prepared,” he shared.

The experience not only showcased the talent at Nile University but also underscored its commitment to fostering innovation among its students, ensuring they can thrive both locally and globally.
