The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has officially announced that the position of Vice-Chancellor will become vacant on November 19, 2025.

In line with the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act No. 1 of 1993 (as amended in 2007), the Council is inviting applications from suitably qualified and distinguished professors with cognate experience in university teaching, research, and administration.

About the University
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, evolved from the former Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), which was established by Law No. 7 on July 30, 1980. With Decree No. 34 of July 1992 (now CAP N139, LFN 2004), the University was taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria with financial effect from September 1, 1992.

The vision of the University is to be a world-class institution engaged in the highest standard of excellence in teaching, research, and service. Its mission is to use teaching, research, and public service to solve societal problems while orienting students to use their education in addressing practical issues affecting them and the Nigerian society. The Job
The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University. He or she also serves as the ex-officio Chairman of Senate and member of the Governing Council. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible to Council in policy implementation relating to finance, property and facilities, general administration, and governance of the institution. The officeholder is also accountable to Senate in matters of academic programme administration and student discipline, in line with existing rules and regulations.

The Candidate
Applicants for the post of Vice-Chancellor are expected to:

  • Possess a good first degree, a master’s degree, and a PhD or its equivalent, relevant to the area of specialization.
  • Be a competent manager of human and material resources.
  • Be highly distinguished, self-motivated, and an academic of the rank of Professor with not less than nine (9) years’ experience on that rank in a reputable university.
  • Be a successful scholar with a strong record of academic achievements rooted in the finest academic traditions and capable of providing leadership.
  • Have a sound grasp of information and communication technology skills relevant to contemporary times.
  • Be a courageous yet humane person, capable of making merit-based decisions.
  • Be of proven integrity with the competence to provide effective leadership to a high-profile academic community.
  • Command a global reputation and respect in academic circles.
  • Be able to create synergy between the University and stakeholders while rising above ethnic, religious, and local biases.
  • Not be more than 65 years old at the time of assumption of office, and able to complete the full five-year term before the retirement age of 70.
  • Be physically and mentally fit.
  • Be ready to perform any other lawful duties assigned by Council.

Terms and Conditions of Service
The salary and other conditions of service attached to the post of Vice-Chancellor are those applicable in all Federal Universities in Nigeria, subject to periodic review by the Council. The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a single term of five (5) years only.

In addition, every candidate is required to submit 25 copies of a statement of his or her vision and mission for the University, not exceeding 1000 words.

For candidates identified and nominated by the Search Team, the Curriculum Vitae must be accompanied by a letter of consent duly signed and dated by the candidate. All candidates must also provide names and addresses of three referees. Each referee should be contacted by the applicant to forward their confidential report directly to the Registrar.

The sealed envelopes containing the complete application should be clearly marked “Post of Vice-Chancellor” at the top left-hand corner. Applications must reach the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, under confidential cover, not later than six (6) weeks from the date of this advertisement. The deadline for submission is 4.00 p.m. on the last day.
