Protests Lead to Indefinite Shutdown of MOAU

In response to a student protest against the hike in tuition fees, Michael Okpara University in Umudike, Abia State, has announced an indefinite suspension of all academic activities. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, confirmed the shutdown, citing the need to safeguard lives and property on campus amidst the violent demonstrations.

The university administration issued a statement urging all students to vacate the premises by 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. Reports indicate that the protest escalated into vandalism, with some hoodlums damaging school property and even attacking the VC's official vehicle.

Expressing her frustration, a computer science student named Victoria highlighted that the protest disrupted final year exams until students paid their fees.

In an attempt to calm tensions, the Student Union Government General Secretary, Enyioma Godslove, appealed for peace, emphasizing that violence would not resolve the issue.
