The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has unveiled plans for its inaugural Spring School in Digital Entrepreneurship and Cultures, set to commence on March 17, 2025. This initiative underscores UNILAG’s commitment to fostering innovation, empowering youth, and advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
The programme, designed to provide technology-driven skills acquisition, will focus on equipping humanities and social sciences graduates, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs, with essential digital competencies. The event will be inaugurated on March 18, 2025, under the chairmanship of Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Femi Hamzat.
According to the Director of the Centre for Digital Humanities and convener of the event, Professor Tunde Ope-Davies, UNILAG is once again demonstrating leadership by pioneering initiatives that promote job and wealth creation through technology. He highlighted that the Spring School would serve as an annual platform to train thousands of graduates, thereby contributing to Nigeria’s growing digital ecosystem.
“The programme will equip fresh graduates and professionals with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to thrive in a tech-driven economy,” Ope-Davies stated. “Participants will receive hands-on training in e-commerce, online business development, data analytics, coding, app development, and investment strategies.”
Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the university’s vision of leveraging digital technology for economic and social impact. “The launch of the Spring School in Digital Entrepreneurship is a testament to UNILAG’s unwavering dedication to innovation and relevance,” she said. “This programme will serve as a catalyst for creating a new generation of digital entrepreneurs, fostering economic prosperity, and driving social transformation.”
The week-long event, concluding on March 22, 2025, will feature lectures, workshops, mentorship sessions, and real-world case studies. Participants will be guided by a blend of international and local academics, industry experts, and successful entrepreneurs. The Faculty of Arts will serve as the venue for the workshops and panel discussions.
Mr. Tim Akano, CEO of New Horizons Limited, will deliver the keynote lecture at the opening ceremony. Professor Ope-Davies reiterated that the Spring School is not just about skill acquisition but about cultivating a culture of innovation, resilience, and adaptability. “Our goal is to empower participants to generate innovative tech-based business ideas, enhance their digital skills, and become future leaders capable of driving positive change in society,” he stated.
The programme is open to postgraduate students, recent graduates, and aspiring entrepreneurs from across Nigeria and beyond. UNILAG aims to leverage its state-of-the-art facilities and digital resources to provide a transformative learning experience that will shape the future of digital entrepreneurship in the country.
