UNILORIN VC Prof. Egbewole Hails China-Africa Cooperation for Enhancing New MoU with North-China University

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has lauded the ongoing China-Africa cooperation, emphasizing its potential to enhance the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNILORIN and the North-China University of Water Resources and Electric Power.

Prof. Egbewole shared his insights during the First Exchange Mechanism Conference of the China-Africa Consortium of Universities and China-Africa Higher Education Dialogue in Beijing. He highlighted that the cooperation would benefit both institutions through advancements in curriculum development, collaborative research, joint conferences, and impactful community initiatives.

“The current engagement between Africa and China will foster significant development in higher education and create more talents equipped with advanced technologies,” Prof. Egbewole stated. He stressed that UNILORIN and the North-China University would serve as key players in fostering enduring and sustainable development.

Established in 1975, UNILORIN is Nigeria’s most subscribed higher education institution, hosting over 50,000 students and accommodating the highest number of international students in the country. Prof. Egbewole noted that the university boasts 16 academic faculties and offers 103 programs.

The Vice Chancellor also discussed the university’s strides in talent development, including winning the Instructor Award by Huawei and ICT Academy in 2023 and training over 100 students and staff in Artificial Intelligence. However, he acknowledged challenges such as infrastructural limitations, funding constraints, and language diversities.

To address these issues, UNILORIN has introduced virtual laboratories, co-created startups, and established the Centre for Open and Distant Learning to improve access to education. The new MoU with the North-China University aims to expand collaboration opportunities, including the potential establishment of a Confucius Institute and joint research initiatives.
