A University of Ibadan professor, Oladapo Okareh, has emphasized the need for stricter implementation of existing laws to protect intellectual property rights in Nigeria. While acknowledging that adequate laws are in place, he advocates for the renewal of obsolete laws and more effective enforcement to deter violators.

Okareh made the call during the 2025 IP Day celebration, urging government ministries, departments, and agencies to partner with institutions of higher learning for mutual benefits and national development. He also advocated for better funding and awareness creation on intellectual property rights issues.

The professor encouraged the government to support talented creators and entrepreneurs with innovative ideas, particularly local fabricators and students contributing to the arts.
