Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has been given approval to commence and operate the Center for Automotive Training, Transport and Logistics.

This was made known during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nse U. Essien, by the Senior Transport Officer and representatives from the Transport Unit of the University Tuesday November 21, 2023 at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin local Government Area.

 

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Essien noted that following the approval, all courses in transport field shall be made available for interested persons within and outside the University to enrol and obtain training with certification. He added that the University Management has concluded arrangements with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on training for all transport personnel in the Transport Unit.

The Vice-Chancellor therefore advised the transport officers to take advantage of the Center, in order to develop their skills for more effective service delivery and to facilitate career growth within the University system. He commended them for contributing to the system "I want to express my appreciation and satisfaction with the the services you render to the University. Your duty is not an easy task to perform. Driving involves both physical and psychological calculation and concentration. Stability is needed before one is able to perform it effectively. Your contribution is recognised, that is why we consistently give accident-free bonus to transport personnel at the end of every year as a mark of appreciation, to motivate you to be more diligent and proactive in discharging your duties".

 

The Acting Director, Center for Automotive Training, Transport and Logistics, Dr. Godwin Ekong explained that approval for the Centre to operate in the University was granted by all relevant agencies and regulatory bodies: the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers; Automotive and Locomotive Engineers Institute; National Engineering Design and Development Institute; and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) in collaboration with the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

He added that the Centre will offer all National and International courses spread across automobile and transportation. He also assured that the Center Handbook that contained all information and courses shall be presented to the University Management for approval.

 

In his address, the team leader and the University Senior Transport Supervisor, Mr. Israel Edim thanked the Vice-Chancellor and  University Management for the opportunity given to representatives of transport personnel to meet with them and for responding to the issues raised by them. He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for his peaceful and staff- friendly leadership approach since assumption of office. He assured that transport officers shall continue to discharge their responsibilities diligently at all times and informed that one staff from the Transport Unit had already enrolled in Transport and Logistics Institute for certification.

 

In a vote of thanks, Higher Transport Officer-Mr. Aniedi Usen Udoh appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for the audience accorded them,   establishment of the Center for Automotive Training, Transport and Logistics, which he said will help in training of transport personnel. He assured of the transport officers' continuous cooperation and commitment to discharging their duties towards the progress of the University and prayed for God's guidance for the University management.

Akwang; Senior Assistant Registrar and Head, Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Gabriel Otu; staff of the same Directorate; Senior Assistant Registrar, Directorate of General Administration -Mr. Namnso Marcus Udoudo. Also present from the Transport Unit were: Transport Supervisors-Mr. Akaninyene David and Mr. Emmanuel U. Essien; Chief Driver-Mr. Ndueso F. Ifenyin and Higher Officer-Mr. Udo Akpan Akrasi.
