This milestone was achieved during a plenary session held on Thursday, following a comprehensive consideration of the bill.
The bill was presented by its sponsor, Senator Bamidele Opeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Ekiti. Senator Bamidele highlighted the bill's objectives, emphasizing the importance of creating a world-class institution that can produce highly skilled technologists and human resources necessary to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Senator Bamidele, who also serves as the Senate Majority Leader, pointed out that the primary purpose of the bill is to increase access to university education, considering the high number of qualified candidates who annually find themselves unable to secure admission to universities across the country.
He stated, "The objectives of the university are, first and foremost, to set up an ultra-modern institution that will develop world-class technologists, as well as human resources that can sustainably manage our nation’s economy by providing technical and management expertise at the highest level."
Furthermore, the university, when established, will play a crucial role in advancing knowledge through research, fostering innovative technological solutions, promoting entrepreneurship, and facilitating wealth management within its core areas of interest.
In addition, Senator Bamidele expressed his belief that enacting this bill would significantly contribute to transforming Nigeria's technological and educational landscape, producing the skilled workforce and expertise necessary to accelerate economic growth and ensure sustainable development.
In his contribution to the discussion, Senator Ahmed Lawan, who represents Yobe State and formerly served as Senate President, recalled that the bill had been passed by the 9th National Assembly. He wholeheartedly endorsed the bill, emphasizing the critical importance of technology and environmental sciences in the 21st century. He called for an educational system that focuses on knowledge-based economies and the development of a workforce capable of driving the nation's progress.
