BSU Introduces Community Service as Penalty for Exam Misconduct

Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, has introduced a new disciplinary measure for students caught in examination misconduct, mandating them to perform community service on the university campus or face expulsion. This decision was made during the institution's 315th special Senate session.

In a notable shift, BSU’s Senate also extended clemency to students involved in cases of examination malpractice from the second semester of the 2020/2021 academic session and the first semester of 2022/2023. However, the pardon does not cover students involved in violent acts, cultism, theft, physical assault, or rape.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Joe Iorapuu, who chaired the session, emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader reform aimed at reshaping the university’s disciplinary system. The goal is to foster a rehabilitative approach, allowing students to correct their behavior while minimizing the number of young individuals leaving the university without qualifications.

This new policy is part of the university's commitment to uphold academic integrity while promoting a supportive learning environment.
