CJID Provides Training for Campus Journalists and Mass Communication Students at Danfodiyo Varsity
The Project Officer of CJID, Iretomiwa Dele-Yusuff, highlighted the importance of this training in fostering media sustainability and enhancing the ability of journalists to engage in evidence-based reporting on campus. She noted that the participants' receptiveness significantly helped in improving their skills and addressing knowledge gaps among them.
The Centre for Journalism, Innovation and Development (CJID) successfully concluded a four-day training program for campus journalists and Mass Communication students from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS). The training, conducted as part of the Campus Reporter project, focused on equipping participants with skills in evidence-based reporting, accountability journalism, and news editing, taking place from October 16th to 19th, 2023.

The campus journalism training at UDUS received a positive response from the participants, who showed an increased interest in pursuing journalism on campus. The CJID team offered various sessions designed to enhance their skills over the four-day training period. Financial autonomy for tertiary institutions was among the strategies presented during the training to promote self-sustainability and reduce dependency on the Federal Government.
Rt Honourable Jisalo also pointed out that this move aligns with the government's renewed hope agenda, emphasizing the need for universities to seek funding through grants and corporate sponsorships to enhance competitiveness and strive for excellence in education.

Abdulwasiu Olokooba, President of the National Association of Campus Journalists (NACJ), expressed his delight in hosting the training and described it as a long-cherished dream that came to fruition. Despite the challenges faced during the training, Abdulwasiu believes the investment in the training will pay off if participants effectively put their acquired knowledge into practice.

The training also received positive feedback from participants, such as Abdul Khadijat Sewedo and Aisha Kamaldeen Temilolu. Beyond journalism, these participants found the program impactful in teaching them valuable life lessons and providing a broader understanding of society. The facilitators were commended for their knowledge and enthusiasm, making the training both educational and enjoyable.
In closing, it was emphasized that participants should actively utilize the knowledge gained during the training as a stepping stone for their future careers, as this training signifies a substantial investment by both CJID and NACJ in their journalistic development.
