ESUT Transitions from Pre-Science to Enhanced Pre-Degree Programme
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) adapts to changing academic landscape with the introduction of an upgraded Pre-degree Programme.
Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has officially phased out its Pre-Science programme, a historical initiative aimed at addressing challenges in securing qualified students for science-based departments. Originally introduced to overcome a shortage of qualified candidates, the Pre-Science programme has seen diminished relevance as most departments now witness sufficient enrollment.
In its stead, ESUT has unveiled an upgraded one-year intensive programme known as the Pre-degree programme. This new initiative is meticulously designed to elevate the quality of admitted students, providing a comprehensive educational foundation. Unlike its predecessor, the Pre-degree Programme is set to complement the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) intake by introducing high-caliber students across various departments.

One of the driving factors behind this transition is the proven academic success of students admitted through the intensive one-year Pre-degree programme when compared to those admitted through JAMB. Statistical data from other universities support the claim that Pre-degree students often outperform their counterparts in various academic assessments.
Additionally, the revamped Pre-degree curriculum incorporates both the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and JAMB syllabus. This inclusive approach allows students admitted based on awaiting results, but who did not meet the required standards, to retake the O’Level exam while simultaneously receiving training to excel in the JAMB exam.
Recognizing the standards set by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ESUT acknowledges that students undergoing remedial courses, such as the Pre-degree programme, must pass the JAMB exam to meet the minimum cutoff point for that academic year. Consequently, the Pre-degree programme has undergone a calendar redesign to align with the NUC requirements, ensuring optimal relevance and service delivery.
An noteworthy adjustment in the Pre-degree programme is the timing of the JAMB exam, which is now scheduled about one month before the end of the programme. This strategic shift aims to maintain student focus throughout the entirety of the programme, preventing distractions and promoting consistent engagement in academic activities.
The Pre-degree programme at ESUT offers two distinct options – Science and Arts. Each option features a specific set of subjects tailored to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience. In the Science option, subjects include Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Geography. Meanwhile, the Arts option covers Mathematics, English Language, Literature in English, Economics, Government, and Geography.
ESUT's transition to the enhanced Pre-degree programme underscores its commitment to academic excellence and adaptability in meeting the evolving needs of students and educational standards.
