Federal Poly Offa Students Stage Peaceful Protest Over SUG Election and Other Grievances
Among the key demands of the protesting students were the immediate commencement of students’ union government (SUG) elections prior to matriculation. Additionally, they called for hostel fees to be made optional rather than mandatory, a reduction in school fees, and addressed concerns regarding the high cost of textbooks, chest x-rays, and instances of sexual harassment within the institution.

Students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, took to the streets on Thursday in a peaceful demonstration to demand the prompt conduct of students’ union elections.
The protest, which saw the closure of the school’s permanent site gate, effectively restricted access for both staff and students.
Among the key demands of the protesting students were the immediate commencement of students’ union government (SUG) elections prior to matriculation. Additionally, they called for hostel fees to be made optional rather than mandatory, a reduction in school fees, and addressed concerns regarding the high cost of textbooks, chest x-rays, and instances of sexual harassment within the institution.
Confirming the development, Dr. Atilola Moses Idowu, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, explained that the students’ grievances primarily revolved around the management’s handling of students’ election matters.

Dr. Idowu further elaborated on efforts made to address the students’ concerns, stating, “The major demand of the aggrieved students is the conduct of the students’ union government election... The matter will be tabled before the management for action.”
Despite attempts to negotiate and pacify the students, tensions remained high as the students persisted in their demands. However, calm was eventually restored following the management's directive for students to disperse and return home for the Easter celebrations.
