FUOTUOKE Postgraduate Orientation: Setting the Stage for Academic Excellence for Graduate Students

Fresh postgraduate students of Federal University Otuoke (FUO) who gained admission in the 2022/2023 academic session attended a one-day orientation exercise on July 24, 2024, at the Postgraduate School Auditorium on the West Campus.

The event, aimed at familiarizing new students with the rules, regulations, and general requirements of the Postgraduate School, was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias.

In his opening speech, Professor Adias referenced the new National Anthem, which was sung by the students and staff present, as a sign that the School was on the right track to producing well-rounded intellectuals. He highlighted FUO’s commitment to providing opportunities for postgraduate study through its various programs and wished the students success in their academic pursuits.

Professor Adias urged the new students to be humble, to study diligently, and to embody the values reflected in the Federal University Otuoke Anthem. He then officially declared the orientation exercise open.

Professor Benjamin Okaba, Dean of the Postgraduate School and President of the Ijaw National Council (INC), welcomed the new students to what he described as a prestigious University of learning. He noted that this was the second orientation program since the Postgraduate School’s inception.

Professor Okaba emphasized that the orientation was designed to acquaint students with the University environment, key academic requirements, and the functions of the Postgraduate School. He congratulated the 351 students admitted for the 2022/2023 session and stressed that the School is committed to meeting global standards for academic excellence and innovative service delivery. He encouraged the students to uphold the tradition of academic excellence that FUO is known for.

Professor Festus C. Akpotohwho, Dean of the Faculty of Education, remarked that by enrolling in postgraduate studies, the students have agreed to adhere to the University’s rules and regulations, which promote orderly communication channels. He emphasized that orientation is a crucial part of the learning process and urged the students to take it seriously, behave well, and work hard to excel in their academic endeavors.

Professor Akachi Odoemene, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, also congratulated the students and advised them to avoid immature behavior during and after exams. He reminded them that they are now postgraduate students and should study actively to make their education purposeful and productive. He stressed the importance of maintaining academic integrity and avoiding exam malpractice in any form.

Professor Cletus Akenbo, Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, advised postgraduate students to conduct their own research and avoid shortcuts, as these would be detrimental to their academic success.

Lastly, Professor Francis Oluleye, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Dean of Sciences in their separate remarks, advised the students to be proactive, pay close attention to their studies, and strive to be the best they can be.
