Leaders Must Build Networks to Drive Change, NDDC Rep Urges FUTA Students

Prince Otito Atikase, the Ondo State representative on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and former member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, emphasized the importance of building networks and fostering relationships for effective leadership during a retreat for Student Union leaders at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). The event was held at Premier Holiday Resort, Igbara-Oke, on September 5, 2004.

Addressing the students, led by Student Union President Adegoriola Abejoye, Atikase discussed the qualities essential for impactful leadership, including emotional intelligence, character, sacrifice, selflessness, and vision. He highlighted the significance of aligning leadership efforts with the aspirations of the people and encouraged the students to leverage alumni networks as a valuable resource for achieving their goals.

In his keynote speech titled “Building Bridges: Cultivating Strong Networks for Effective Leadership,” Atikase outlined that a leader’s effectiveness is significantly enhanced by their ability to build and maintain supportive relationships. He encouraged the student leaders to intentionally develop networks that can support their leadership objectives and advance their careers post-graduation.

Professor Adenike Oladiji, Vice Chancellor of FUTA, echoed Atikase’s sentiments, describing student leadership as a crucial training ground for future responsibilities. She emphasized that student leaders must foster connections and collaborate to align with the university’s vision of becoming a world-class institution of technology.

Professor David Oke, Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized the importance of teamwork in leadership. "Leadership is not an individual endeavor but a collective responsibility. The success of the Students Union hinges on your ability to work together, support one another, and harness your diverse strengths towards common goals," he noted. Oke highlighted the need for student leaders to drive positive change both within the university and in the broader community.

The retreat, praised by FUTASU President Adegoriola Abejoye as “engaging and productive,” provided valuable insights from speakers who shared relatable experiences. Abejoye noted that the retreat has equipped student leaders with the tools to enhance their leadership and elevate student unionism at FUTA.
