Make useful recommendations for national development, FULafia VC tells conference participants

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, has called on conference participants to make useful recommendations for national development. 

He said: "As academics, we must be ready to provide objective and realistic suggestions on all national discussions with a view to developing our country."

The vice-chancellor made the call when he declared open the Second National Conference of the Faculty of Education, Federal University of Lafia.

The conference which had the Theme: “Curriculum Delivery in the 21st Century for the Attainment of National Development,” took place at the 300-seat Auditorium, Take-Off Site Campus of FULafia.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ali Is'haq Shugaba, Abdul Rahman, said academic conferences do not only present valuable opportunities to learn about cutting-edge research, meet new people and build strong professional relationships with others in your field but they serve as avenues for making recommendations to assist policymakers in decision-making.

He commended the faculties and departments in the University for sustaining the academic culture of the University through regularly holding conferences and seminars, saying their actions were projecting FULafia positively.

In her welcome address, the convener of the conference and Dean of the Faculty of Education, of FULafia, Prof. Josephine Odey, said the theme of the conference was necessitated by the recent introduction of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

She said the conference hoped to look at some of the advantages of effective curriculum delivery using tools such as skills, creativity, teamwork, innovation, critical thinking and others.

Prof. Odey thanked the vice-chancellor for his support to ensure the successful holding of the conference.

She called on participants to listen and attend the technical sessions and make contributions.

In their separate presentations, Prof. Chinwe Modumogu, who was the Keynote presenter, and Prof. Sev Sabastine Ammoor and Prof. Abbas Yusuf Mustapha, the first and second lead paper presenters, respectively, all identified defective implementation of the existing curriculum, poor delivery of content, poor mentorship skills, lack of effective collaboration, teacher factor and lack of effective measurement and evaluation as the bane of curriculum delivery.

In their goodwill messages, the Registrar of FULafia, Nuradeen Abdu, and the University Librarian, Prof. Abiodun Iyoro, both commended Odey for organising the conference, applauding the calibre of the presenters at the event.
