In a strategic move to solidify its position as a national leader in open and distance education, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has issued a formal call for memoranda to the University Community. This initiative follows the recent inauguration of the Committee on Strengthening the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed.

The committee, constituted on January 22, 2026, is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the DLC's academic, technological, and governance frameworks to ensure global competitiveness and expanded access to quality education.

The committee's mandate is centered on identifying key growth opportunities and mitigating risks within the distance learning sector. Its primary objectives include:

Performance Assessment: Reviewing existing online and distance programmes for scalability and quality assurance.

Infrastructure Innovation: Proposing new strategies for digital infrastructure and student support systems.

Growth Roadmap: Developing a clear implementation priority list and performance indicators to enhance national reach.

Contributions are expected to align with the National Universities Commission (NUC) policy guidelines, which emphasize the autonomy of Distance Learning Centres. Key operational standards under review include the center's ability to:

Manage a dedicated LMS portal and digital resource centers.

Coordinate the development and deployment of course materials.
