Teachers in Borno have lamented that their salaries are not enough to afford their basic living necessities, due to the low amount of their wages, on May 2nd, 2024.

In an interview with Arise television, they complained that a meager sum of less than fifteen thousand naira (N15, 000) per month was paid. According to them, such amount are not enough for their transport fare in a month.

A teacher interviewed stated, "My transportation fare to work, takes up all of my salary. Sometimes, I trek to work to save for other expenses"

Another teacher noted, "It cannot even cover for my feeding, shelter, transport, and clothing".

It was surprising to find out that some teachers in Borno state are paid seven thousand naira (N7, 000) per month. 

The federal government, however dispelled these claims. According to the Commissioner of Education in Borno state, Abba Wakilbe, they aimed to destroy the reputation of the government.

Wakilbe also noted that those teachers were not paid according to the minimum wage, due to their qualifications. He stated that a competency test was held, however, only 5,257 participants scored sixty percent (60%) and above, 6,227 participants applied for further training, and 4,330 participants were not trainable. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future by educating and nurturing the next generation, providing the foundation for all other professions, and are essential for the development of society.

He noted that those unqualified teachers were still allowed to teach, for compassionate reasons. According to him, they would be moved to other duties in their local government areas.

Investing in teachers is investing in the future. According to Arise television, the federal government has invested one billion naira in 6227 participants in the teaching competency test, for further training. This would increase the quality of education, allowing teachers to continuously pursue professional development, benefiting the teachers, students, the and society as a whole.
