The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, has commended the Director of Academic Planning of the University, Prof. Ilemona Adofu, for being the first person to present a paper in the maiden Economics Department seminar

The event which took place at the Mallam Adamu Adamu Office and Lecture Complex, Permanent Site Campus of the University.

In attendance during the seminar were some deans, directors, staff and students of the University.

Declaring the event open, Abdul Rahman thanked the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Abdullahi Dan'asabe Jibrin, and Head of Department of Economics, Dr Walter Ogwuoke, for organising the seminar, urging them to sustain the newly introduced initiative.

He congratulated Adofu for being the first person to present a seminar paper, describing him as a vibrant, confident and dependable colleague who has used his wealth of knowledge and experience for the development of the University.

The vice-chancellor enjoined staff and students to always create time to attend seminars, conferences and public lectures so they can acquire knowledge for their academic enhancement.

In his presentation titled: "STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND RESEARCH GAP: A Simple Guide to Getting it right in Social Science Research," Adofu stated that academic research “is a solid bedrock needed for the development of any society.”

The academic don said that the motivation for any research work is the identification of problem as efforts of humans, organisations and governments were geared towards achieving specific goals in the society.

Adofu said that as a University lecturer, his interaction with students at all levels over the years has shown that most of them struggled to get a statement of problem right and even when they eventually got it right, only a few can actually explain how they did it, noting that with the importance attached to statement of problem in research, it was important to demystify it to the level that students and researchers can get it right in a simple chronological order.

In a detailed analysis of what research gap and statement of the problem are, the professor of monetary economics explained that research gaps is a problem-related literature while statement of the problem is putting research gap in a constructive sentence to drive the entire framework of your research.

Adofu talked extensively about sources of research problem, characteristics of research problems, advantages of statement of the problem in research and what is research gap.

He concluded that considering the importance of statement of research problem and its connection with the research gap, it was proper for a researcher to have a better understanding of the two important concepts.

He emphasised that understanding these concepts required demystifying it to a level that makes it easy to grasp, especially for beginners.

Speaking earlier, the Head of Economics Department, Dr Walter Ogwuoke, expressed his gratitude to the vice-chancellor for his support to the department which made it possible to organise the seminar.

He thanked the Adofu for accepting to be the first presenter.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. A. D. Jibrin, said that Adofu was among the member of staff making significant contributions to the successes recorded in the faculty.
