UDUS Senate Approves Results Amidst Concerns Over Grading Policies

The Senate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) has reviewed and approved the results of the 2023/2024 academic session, sparking mixed reactions from students and the general public.

 

According to verified information, the Department of Chemistry produced 10 first-class degree holders, 77 second-class upper degree holders, 107 second-class lower degree holders, and 24 third-class degree holders. However, 109 students were required to retake one or more courses before graduating, raising concerns about the department's grading policies.

Dr. M. L. Muhammad, Head of Department, Energy and Applied Chemistry, addressed these concerns in an interview, emphasizing the role of the Senate Standing Committee on Examination (SSCE) in ensuring the fairness and integrity of the review process.

 

Dr. Muhammad clarified that students who did not meet the required pass mark were required to retake the course, and that the SSCE approved and reviewed all results before release. He also assured that the department's grading policies had not changed and that no lecturer would deliberately fail students.

The university's grading policies and the role of the SSCE have come under scrutiny, with some students expressing concerns about the fairness and transparency of the review process. However, Dr. Muhammad emphasized the importance of the SSCE in ensuring the integrity of the review process.

 

The university has also highlighted the third spillover opportunity, which allows students to complete their studies rather than being dismissed from the university.
