The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally approved the commencement of several postgraduate programmes at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT), Bayelsa State, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.
The approval follows a resource verification visit by NUC experts, who assessed the university’s human and material capacity to run the programmes. A letter dated January 30, 2026, signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, confirmed the authorization.
The approval covers full-time postgraduate diplomas (PGD), Masters, and PhD programmes in the following disciplines:

- Accounting (PGD, M.Sc., PhD)
- Biology (PGD, M.Sc., PhD)
- Business Administration (PGD, M.Sc., MBA, PhD)
- Biochemistry (PGD, M.Sc., PhD)

- Mass Communication (PGD, M.Sc., PhD)
- Computer Science (PGD, M.Sc., PhD)

NUC emphasized that the approval is strictly for full-time programmes. The university must obtain separate approval for any part-time versions.
Additionally, UAT is required to:
- Maintain the approved course titles and nomenclature.
- Ensure adequate human and material resources to support these programmes.
- Seek NUC approval before making any changes to curricula or course titles.
This milestone expands UAT’s capacity for advanced research and postgraduate education, strengthening its position as a center for higher learning in the region.
