In a bid to eradicate the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), women groups and stakeholders in Ebonyi State are advocating for the integration of FGM tutorials into the education curriculum. This call comes as part of efforts to instill awareness and promote zero tolerance for FGM among students.

During a UNICEF FGM media engagement event held in Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi State, stakeholders emphasized the importance of educating pupils and students about the dangers of FGM from a young age. They believe that by incorporating FGM awareness into the school system, future generations will be better equipped to reject and prevent this harmful practice.

February 6th, marked annually as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight against this practice. Stakeholders used this occasion to celebrate achievements, raise awareness, and renew their commitment to ending FGM.

According to Mike Okechi, a retired school principal, while progress has been made in discouraging FGM through initiatives led by UNICEF and other partners, there remains a need for continued education and awareness efforts. He stressed the importance of community involvement, particularly by male members, in ensuring the abandonment of FGM practices.
