Enugu State is seeing a fierce competition for teaching jobs. Initially, over 12,000 people applied for the positions, but only 6,700 were shortlisted to compete for 380 teaching roles in secondary schools across the state.
The selection process, held at several testing centers including Union Boys Secondary School and Holy Rosary College, is focused on filling a shortage of teachers in subjects like English, ICT, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The board's strict criteria meant that non-indigenes, older applicants, and those without the required qualifications were excluded. "Some did not have the right qualifications, while others were over the age limit or did not provide their certificates," Fr. Mgbodile noted.
This recruitment drive aims to address a significant teacher shortage, especially in rural areas and science subjects. Following a 2023 review, the board has also sent urban teachers to rural schools and approved new hires to address the gap.

The goal is to improve education quality in public schools and reduce dependence on private institutions. Fr. Mgbodile is hopeful that this process will find the right teachers to enhance educational standards in Enugu. If the current recruitment does not meet expectations, more applications may be invited to ensure the best candidates are selected.
