Bayero University, Kano's Center for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID) held its 2nd International Conference on Monday, 8th January 2024.

The conference, themed "Islam and Violence: Facts and Fallacies," aimed to create awareness and dispel misconceptions associating Islam with violence.

Conference Opening:

The conference was inaugurated by the Governor of Kano State, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo. Governor Yusuf emphasized that Islam preaches peace and peaceful coexistence, and it is wrong to label the entire Muslim community based on the actions of a small group of radicals.

Vice Chancellor's Perspective:

Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, expressed the timeliness of the conference, considering the prevailing narrative portraying Islam negatively. He highlighted the importance of bringing such issues for deliberation to unravel facts from fallacies.

Director's Welcome Address:

Dr. Muhammad Sani Umar Rijiyar Lemo, the Director of CICID, reiterated the conference's objective to correct negative perceptions surrounding Islam. He emphasized that Islam is a religion of peace and condemned any association of violence with the true teachings of Islam.

Keynote Speaker's Insights:

Keynote speaker Dr. Seydou Madibaba Sylla, the Rector of Sahel University, Mali, and President of the African Council of Ulama, defined Islam as a religion of peace, guaranteeing the protection of lives and property. He rejected any attempt to link Islam with violence, describing it as a campaign of calumny.

Scholarly Contributions:

The conference featured over 100 paper presentations by scholars, religious leaders, and policymakers from around the world. Scholars emphasized Islam's commitment to peace, justice, and compassion. Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar, the Imam of Al-Furqan Mosque, discredited insinuations linking Islam with violence, referencing the Holy Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

Certificates of Award:

Distinguished dignitaries, including Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, Dr. Seydou Madibaba Sylla, Prof. Abubakar A. Rasheed, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, were honored with certificates of award during the event.
