The Federal University, Lokoja has inaugurated a new zoo at its Field Main Campus to facilitate practical learning in biodiversity, wildlife, and recreation. The inauguration ceremony was led by Ibrahim Goni, Conservator-General of the National Park Service.

The zoo features a variety of animals, including donkeys, snakes, ostriches, horses, and monkeys. Additionally, it includes children's amusement and recreational facilities, providing educational and recreational opportunities for the community.

Ibrahim Goni highlighted the zoo's potential to contribute to global conservation efforts and foster an appreciation for Nigeria's rich natural heritage. He emphasized the crucial role of zoos and conservatories in biodiversity preservation, noting their function as living laboratories that enhance understanding of the natural world. Goni also mentioned that accredited zoos and aquariums in the U.S. attract about 180 million visitors annually, contributing $24 billion to the economy, while in Nigeria, travel and tourism contribute 3.6% to the GDP.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akinwumi, described the zoo as an invaluable educational resource for students and researchers in biology, environmental science, and wildlife management. He stressed the importance of zoos in global conservation efforts and raising awareness about protecting the natural world.

Director of the centre, Prof. Jacqueline Badaki, discussed the impacts of climate change and habitat loss on wildlife. She emphasized the need for captive breeding programs to ensure the survival of species that cannot thrive in the wild.
