The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is set to take the lead in a new farmer market initiative announced by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

The announcement came during a meeting with the newly constituted Governing Council of FUNAAB, chaired by Pro-Chancellor Oba Abdul-Rasheed Ayorinde Olabomi.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of establishing farmers' markets across the state to enhance food security. He highlighted the aim of leveraging the abundant fertile land and skilled workforce in the region to promote trade, echoing recent discussions among southern Nigerian governors.

He emphasized the potential for regional trade,stating,"We recognize that there is no reason not to promote inter-state or inter-regional trade,given our resources.With the human capacity and arable land at our disposal,we should be able to achieve food security and sufficiency within our region.There is nothing we lack to accomplish this objective,and the establishment of the Farmers' Markets is a strategic step towards realising this goal."

Strategic locations for the markets have already been identified,including Asero in Abeokuta and Ogere along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.Governor Abiodun also announced plans to relocate the Kara cattle market to Ogere,providing a more suitable environment for cattle merchants.

"We believe that positioning the farmers' markets in these key locations will benefit the smallholder farmers in Ogun State," he said.

Governor Abiodun placed further emphasis on FUNAAB's role,stating,"FUNAAB is expected to lead the charge in championing food security,in line with its foundational purpose.Our administration views agriculture as a vital means to ensure food security,create employment,and generate revenue.We are committed to making agriculture a central focus."
