The Federal University Oye-Ekiti, through its Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (DETIE), has commenced a 12-week vocational skills acquisition training for students currently undergoing their Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The programme, which began on Monday, July 7, 2025, is designed to equip students with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge aimed at enhancing their employability, self-reliance, and readiness for the job market.
Addressing the participants during the opening session, Mr. Iromini Abbass, Head of Vocational Training at DETIE, urged the students to remain disciplined and take full advantage of the opportunity to learn from industry experts and acquire hands-on skills.
The training is being facilitated by Entrepreneurship Development Officers within the Directorate and covers a wide range of skill areas, including cosmetology, confectionery, web design, solar and inverter installation, woodwork, photography, bead and art making, tie and dye, event planning and decoration, leatherworks, paint production, as well as knitting and weaving.
Speaking on the objectives of the programme, Mrs. Oluwakemi Raji, a Chief Entrepreneurship Development Officer, highlighted that the training will provide students with hands-on experience, which is essential for career development and financial independence.
In her remarks, the Director of DETIE, Dr. Adebimpe Esan, noted that the initiative aligns with the university’s commitment to producing a skilled and entrepreneurial workforce capable of contributing to national development. She also acknowledged the unwavering support of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Strategic Partnerships, Research, Innovation, and Linkages (SPRIL), Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, and the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olubunmi Shittu, for their continued encouragement and investment in student empowerment initiatives.
"This training not only benefits our students but also advances the university’s vision of fostering innovation and economic growth," Dr. Esan added.
As the 12-week journey unfolds, FUOYE remains committed to shaping students into creators, innovators, and problem-solvers—ready to thrive in a competitive world. Through initiatives like this, the university continues to light the path toward a future where skills meet opportunity, and dreams are transformed into lasting impact.
