Historic Extension: Imo State Extends Teachers' Retirement Age to 65, Gov Uzodinma Signs Landmark Bill into Law

In a groundbreaking move, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has approved a bill extending the retirement age for teachers in the state to 65 years or 40 years of service. The previous retirement age stood at 35 years of service or 60 years of age.

Governor Uzodinma, who signed the bill into law on Wednesday, emphasized that the objective is to provide teachers in public schools with a heightened sense of job security, thereby enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency.

In a video clip posted on the governor's Facebook page, Mr. Uzodinma expressed optimism that the extended retirement age would motivate teachers to work harder, ultimately benefitting Imo State's education system. He challenged teachers to demonstrate increased commitment and seriousness in their roles.

The governor described the move as "value addition" and stressed its alignment with a similar national legislation signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2022. The national law also extended the retirement age for teachers across the country to 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service.

"This decision aligns with my steadfast commitment to preserving the wealth of experience and knowledge within our educational system," Governor Uzodinma declared.

The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chike Olemgbe, praised the governor's concern for the welfare of the state's residents. He revealed that the bill, which underwent thorough legislative processes, was the first to be passed by the 10th Assembly since its inauguration.
