KWASU Engineers Drive Innovation with Electricity-Powered Vehicles Amid Fuel Hike

The Engineering team at the Centre for Sustainable Energy of Kwara State University (KWASU) has achieved a significant milestone by converting a bus to run on electricity. This announcement was made by the Acting Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, during the institution’s 10th and 11th combined convocation ceremony.

The conversion project, which comes in the wake of the removal of petroleum subsidies and the subsequent rise in fuel prices, positions KWASU at the forefront of environmental sustainability and problem-solving. “This initiative ensures higher efficiency in powering automobiles, helps our environment to be less polluted and has attracted partnerships with the Kwara State Government and private institutions,” said Professor Jimoh.
In addition to the bus, a Sedan and a Hilux have also been converted to electric power, and the project has begun to attract interest from investors. The Vice Chancellor encouraged individuals and the state government to bring their scrap vehicles for conversion at a moderate cost.

In a further commitment to environmental sustainability, the institution has commissioned a plastic recycling plant. This initiative is currently converting tons of plastic waste into pavement stones, preventing further pollution.

During the convocation ceremony, it was disclosed that the institution produced a total of 16,316 graduates for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions. Of these, 183 graduated with First Class honors, 5,145 with Second Class Upper division, 8,420 with Second Class Lower division, and 1,455 with Third Class division. The institution also awarded 11,096 first degrees and 767 higher degrees for the 2021/2022 academic session, and 4,107 first degrees and 345 higher degrees for the 2022/2023 academic session.
