In response to rising electricity tariffs and mounting unpaid bills, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba has embraced solar energy to ensure uninterrupted power supply. This innovative shift not only guarantees continuous power for critical healthcare services but also underscores the importance of renewable energy in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The decision to adopt solar energy comes amid escalating electricity costs and significant unpaid bills that have burdened federal health institutions across Nigeria. Recent hikes in electricity tariffs announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) have compounded these challenges. Government agencies, including hospitals, have struggled to manage these rising costs. For example, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) threatened to disconnect power to the Presidential Villa and other top government offices due to unpaid bills totaling N47 billion. The Nigerian Army alone owes over N12 billion.

Healthcare facilities have been particularly affected. The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan faced multiple power outages in March due to unpaid bills amounting to N495 million. These disconnections severely hampered essential services, posing significant risks to patients and staff.

LUTH has also faced substantial financial strain due to high electricity costs. According to Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), LUTH spends up to N150 million monthly on electricity but receives only N14 million in government subvention for power. The previous CMD, Prof. Chris Bode, highlighted that the rising cost of gas had jeopardized the hospital’s gas-powered hybrid energy system, necessitating the exploration of alternative energy sources.

To mitigate these challenges, LUTH has initiated a pioneering solar energy project. This initiative aims to create a hybrid energy system incorporating renewable energy sources. The hospital management, led by Prof. Adeyemo, is committed to leveraging solar power to reduce electricity costs and ensure a reliable power supply for critical healthcare services.

The project began with a test run, recently commissioned, involving the installation of solar panels and necessary infrastructure. This initial phase covers Ward A, providing 91.7% of the electricity needed, with public supply accounting for only 8.3% over one week. The hospital plans to expand this system to cover the entire facility by the end of the year.

The adoption of solar energy offers numerous benefits. By reducing dependence on the national grid and gas-powered energy, LUTH can significantly cut electricity expenses and allocate funds to other critical needs. Solar energy provides a more stable power source compared to the frequently disrupted supply from electricity distribution companies.
