MDCN Approves Bayelsa Medical University MBBS Programme

Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, the Deputy Registrar of MDCN, led an 11-man delegation on a two-day inspection and accreditation visit to the university. During this visit, he expressed satisfaction with the progress of the medical institution and announced that the MDCN has increased the MBBS admission quota per session from 50 to 100 students.

MDCN Approves Bayelsa Medical University MBBS Programme

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), responsible for accrediting medical programs in Nigerian universities, has given its nod to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program at the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU).

This approval signifies that medical students at the university can now participate in Part One of the MBBS examination.

Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, the Deputy Registrar of MDCN, led an 11-man delegation on a two-day inspection and accreditation visit to the university. During this visit, he expressed satisfaction with the progress of the medical institution and announced that the MDCN has increased the MBBS admission quota per session from 50 to 100 students.

The MDCN delegation commended the State Government and BMU for their efforts in enhancing the standard of the institution. Dr. Nwakanma also made several requests to the government, including the revival of the BMU teaching hospital project, provision of buses for the institution, employment of qualified manpower, construction of more laboratories, and completion of the satellite campus at Sampou.

In response, Governor Douye Diri expressed gratitude to the Council for its fair assessment of the institution and his administration. He affirmed his commitment to fulfilling the mandate of the state's people and assured that the issues raised by the Council would be addressed before their next visit.

Governor Diri also praised the MDCN for maintaining high standards for medical schools in Nigeria, stating that their efforts have contributed to the production of quality medical personnel who are highly sought after globally. Additionally, he advocated for true federalism in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for states to have more autonomy in resource management.

The delegation from MDCN included prominent figures such as Prof. B. Jiburum, Prof. Sanusi Ode, Prof. Blessing Idinfe, Prof. S. Alayemi, Prof. B. Afolayan, Prof. Nuhu Dakurm, Prof. Yusuf Haruna, Prof. M. Jamoa, Mrs. Ayobami Ismail, and Bello Misbahu from the MDCN Medical Education Unit.
