NANS Meets FG, Demands Improvement in Welfare of Students
The meeting, chaired by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, resulted in an agreement to establish biannual meetings between the government, heads of tertiary institutions, and NANS, aimed at promoting peace, harmony, and inclusivity in the educational system.
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of students and address issues affecting their well-being, including arbitrary charges imposed by tertiary institutions.
During a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, a delegation from NANS, led by its national president, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, emphasized the need for concerted efforts to improve students' welfare.
The meeting, chaired by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, resulted in an agreement to establish biannual meetings between the government, heads of tertiary institutions, and NANS, aimed at promoting peace, harmony, and inclusivity in the educational system.
Critical issues discussed during the meeting included concerns about escalating school fees, leadership within tertiary institutions, and the overall relationship between the Ministry and students.
In response, Minister of State for Education, Sununu, reaffirmed the government's commitment to collaborating with student leaders to ensure a robust and inclusive educational system in Nigeria. He acknowledged the challenges facing the education sector and highlighted the government's efforts to address them, including President Bola Tinubu's increase in the education budget.
Sununu also mentioned ongoing initiatives to enhance security measures within educational institutions and attract funding partners to support education in Nigeria.
The meeting concluded with resolutions to address various student concerns, including the joint review of school fees, periodic renovation of hostels through public-private partnerships, and measures to expedite JAMB accreditation for direct-entry students.
In response, the Senate President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, expressed appreciation to the government for its readiness to engage in dialogue for the betterment of the educational system.

"We are ready for dialogue.
