The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has approved the internship and indexing programs for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, ending a 19-year stagnation in the state's nursing education sector. This landmark approval was announced during a visit by the NMCN accreditation team to Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House, Enugu.

Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, Registrar of the NMCN, announced the council's decision, praising the Mbah administration for its commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and the welfare of health workers. The council also approved the immediate recruitment of 50 interns at Park Lane, which is expected to boost the state's nursing workforce.

Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, expressed regret over the long period of stagnation but emphasized the administration's proactive measures to address the issue through significant investments in health infrastructure and worker welfare.

The approvals also include the indexing of nursing students at the newly upgraded Colleges of Nursing, including the former School of Nursing in Awgu. These steps will clear the backlog of unindexed students, allowing them to take professional examinations and qualify as nurses.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, Dr. Yomi Jaye, described the approvals as a monumental breakthrough, highlighting that the governor aims to produce 3,000 nurses annually and upgrade nursing institutions to world-class standards.

The implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) is also expected to retain nursing manpower in the state by providing competitive salaries and reducing the migration of nurses.

This development marks a significant improvement in the healthcare education sector in Enugu, promising better training and retention of healthcare professionals, ultimately benefiting the state's healthcare delivery system.
