The Students’ Union Government (SUG) Directorate of Welfare at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced the extension of the university’s shuttle service to the College of Medical Sciences and Pharmacy axis, in a move aimed at improving mobility and easing transportation challenges faced by students and staff.
The development was confirmed in an official memorandum issued on Wednesday, with the new shuttle route scheduled to commence on Monday, December 15, 2025.
According to the Directorate, the extension will serve students and staff of the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Computing, providing a safer, faster, and more reliable means of transportation to and from the Medical College area. The decision followed consultations involving the SUG Welfare Directorate, the University Transport Unit, faculty leadership, and other relevant stakeholders.
In the memo signed by the Director of Welfare, Sen. Obioha Ozioma Precious, the initiative was described as a direct response to persistent transportation difficulties associated with the challenging terrain leading to the College of Medical Sciences.

Operational details indicate that the shuttle service will run daily between 7:00 am and 10:00 am, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The approved fare for the Medical College–Pharmacy route has been fixed at ₦150, reflecting additional operational demands linked to the route.
Students are to board the shuttle at the designated stand at the Main Gate, where they are advised to queue in an orderly manner. The SUG also established a feedback structure, directing students to channel complaints or concerns relating to shuttle operations, fares, or safety through their respective Faculty Presidents to the Director of Welfare.
The SUG Directorate of Welfare reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing student welfare and promoting a conducive academic environment anchored on safety, accessibility, and efficiency. Students and staff were encouraged to cooperate fully and help disseminate information about the new shuttle service across the campus community.
