UNIJOS Orders Immediate Evacuation of Students as Security Tensions Escalate in Jos

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has directed all students to vacate their hostels immediately following rising security tensions and renewed violence in parts of Jos, Plateau State.

The evacuation order, issued by the university management, was described as a precautionary measure in response to deteriorating security conditions affecting areas within and around the institution.

In an official statement, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, through the Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, said the decision became necessary due to what he described as “the general security situation and near-chaotic scenarios witnessed in areas close to the university.”

The development comes amid reports of sporadic violence and widespread panic in parts of the state capital, raising concerns over the safety of residents, including members of the university community.

Students residing within Jos reportedly began leaving the campus environment on Wednesday afternoon, while those travelling to homes outside the city are expected to depart from Thursday morning.

The university management assured that security operatives have been deployed to protect hostels and critical campus infrastructure during the evacuation period. It also urged students and parents to remain calm while coordinated arrangements continue.

The directive reflects growing concerns over insecurity in the region, which has intermittently disrupted academic and social activities in the city.
