Welcoming the participants, the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Darlington Ewaen Obaseki, emphasized the crucial role of well-trained aides in elderly care, stressing the importance of sincere commitment to learning and excellence in this field.
He reaffirmed UBTH's commitment to becoming the 'Harvard of West Africa' and highlighted the credibility that certifications obtained from UBTH bestows upon its recipients.
The CMD applauded the Geriatrics training team, led by Professor Obehi Akoria, for their meticulous efforts in ensuring global best practices and standards in their training programs.
In his remarks, Prof. Obaseki urged participants to approach the program with unwavering dedication and commitment, emphasizing active participation as key to acquiring the required competencies in caring for the elderly.
This training program is an offshoot of the Elder Friendly Hospitals Initiative (ELDFRHI), which underscores the institution's dedication to providing elder-friendly care and raising elder-friendly champions nationally.
The primary objective of the training of elder care aides in UBTH is to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors necessary to deliver high-quality care to the elderly, systematically addressing a gap that had hitherto been largely ignored.
