Home Economics Teachers Association Advocates Increased Student Enrollment in Home Economics for Skill Development

The Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Abuja Chapter, has passionately urged a surge in student enrollment in Home Economics, emphasizing the subject's potential to equip students with essential skills, fostering self-reliance and financial independence upon graduation.

Commending government support over the years, Mrs. Yisa stressed that skill acquisition is pivotal for poverty reduction in the country. She highlighted the role of Home Economics as a potential Training Hub for skills acquisition in secondary schools.
In her address, Mrs. Yisa encouraged parents to intentionally guide their children to study Home Economics at both the primary and junior/senior secondary education levels. She emphasized that such a decision would lead to economic empowerment for the students, enabling them to be financially independent even after leaving secondary school.

"Students equipped with skills can stand up for themselves financially; they will be economically independent even after leaving secondary school. They will be able to sponsor their higher level education in their choice of institution," she affirmed.
The post-conference meeting, attended by over 60 Home Economics teachers across the Federal Capital Territory, featured presentations highlighting the significance of Home Economics as a subject shaping the younger generation into future entrepreneurs. Practical sessions included crafting household articles, using leftover fabric for projects like foot mats and children's handbags.
