In a bid to uphold the sanctity of official school hours and promote holistic student development, the Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to schools and teachers found extending the school day for extra lessons beyond the official closing hour.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, made this declaration during a visit to a school in the Amuwo-Odofin community. According to reports from TheNation, Commissioner Alli-Balogun emphasized that the additional hour after official closing time is designated for extra-curricular activities, not for supplementary academic lessons paid for by students.

"It has come to our attention that some schools and teachers are utilizing the extra hour after official closing hours for additional academic lessons, which students pay for. This practice is unacceptable and goes against the educational policies of the Lagos State Government," Commissioner Alli-Balogun stated firmly.

He reiterated the importance of extra-curricular activities in the holistic development of students, highlighting various social clubs and activities such as the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Boys Scouts, Boys and Girls Brigade, among others. Commissioner Alli-Balogun emphasized that students must be encouraged to participate in these activities as they contribute significantly to their social, emotional, and physical growth.

The Commissioner warned that any school or teacher found flouting these directives would face severe sanctions from the state government. He urged school administrators and teachers to adhere strictly to the stipulated school hours and prioritize extra-curricular activities for the benefit of the students.
