Nigeria Union of Teachers Condemns Non-Payment of Primary School Teachers' Salaries

At the delegates conference of the federal wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Abuja, the National President, Titus Amba, criticized several state governments for failing to pay primary school teachers for several months. He urged the Federal Government to prioritize basic education, emphasizing the need for state governments to take responsibility for the first nine years of basic education. Amba called for a constitutional amendment to enforce this responsibility and eliminate the issue of unpaid salaries for primary school teachers.

Amba's remarks underscored the importance of addressing the welfare of teachers, as they play a crucial role as agents of change and the cornerstone of educational development in any progressive society. He insisted that ensuring timely payment of salaries and promotion arrears is essential to realizing the vision for the future of education in Nigeria.

Okonta emphasized that a functional teaching service commission would address promotion issues and restore the lost glory of federal schools in Nigeria. He also urged the implementation of the new Teachers Salary Scale approved in 2020 to boost teacher morale and ensure timely promotions.
