Prof. Gambari Reveals Why He Resigned as KWASU Chancellor
Prof. Ibrahim Gambari reveals why he resigned as Kwara State University's Chancellor.
Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammedu Buhari, has disclosed the reason behind his resignation as the Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU). Speaking at the 7th biennial Conference of Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria, themed “Effective University Governance: Role of Stakeholders,” Gambari revealed that the state government’s failure to provide financial support was a key factor.
Gambari, who served as the pioneer chancellor when KWASU was established in 2009, recounted the university's struggle during its first three years without state subvention. "For three years, the state government did not make a single subvention to that university, and I quit as chancellor because I felt it does not make sense to have a state university where the state is not giving a kobo in subvention," Gambari said.

He highlighted the persistent issue of inadequate funding in Nigerian higher education and urged pro-chancellors to explore alternative funding avenues. "Such is the terrain our state universities find themselves today, but in diplomacy and economic development, there is a mantra often repeated: never let a crisis go to waste," he added.

The conference, held in Lagos, was opened by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s commitment to education, noting the establishment of two additional universities, bringing the total to three.

“Our state universities have experienced unprecedented industrial harmony and seamless academic calendars due to systematic governance and partnerships with private entities in providing infrastructure and facilities,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Prof. Gambari’s resignation reiterates the broader challenge of funding for state universities in Nigeria, sparking discussions on sustainable strategies to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of these institutions.
