The University of Calabar has formally organised its first Induction/Oath Taking Ceremony for Physiotherapy Graduands of the institution.

The grand historic, epoch event which involved  48 graduands took place at the ASUU Secretariat of the University of Calabar.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi lauded the milestone achieved which she attributed to the dedication, perseverance and passion of the inductees.

Prof Florence Obi represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaboration, Prof Peter Okafor said the decision of the graduands  to pursue a career in Physiotherapy demonstrates their commitment to improving the lives of others and making a positive impact in the Community.

Prof Obi expressed the optimism that as Physiotherapists, they will play a vital role in promoting health, wellness and rehabilitation as well as enabling individuals to overcome physical challenges , achieve optimal function and enhance their overall quality of life.

The University helmsman congratulated the newly inducted Physiotherapists and wished them a journey filled with purpose, passion and joy.

The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof Ngim Ngim said the event was a special occasion for the College of Medical Sciences  and the University at large being the maiden induction for the Physiotherapy graduands.

He reminded them that as key stakeholders in the Medical team, they must imbibe the characteristics of partnership and mutual respect in their interaction with other members of the team to ensure delivery of care and research of the highest standard.

The acting Dean of the Faculty of Allied Medical Science, Prof Nelson Osuchukwu  represented by the Head of the Department of Radiography, Dr Paulinus  Omini called on the inductees to practise their profession with the highest degree of diligence, honesty and transparency.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria (MRTB), Prof Rufai Ahmed represented by a Professor of Geriatric Physiotherapy, Prof Christopher Akosile  commended the management of the University of Calabar for supporting the programme over the years noting that the organisation  of the induction is proof that the programme has been accredited.

He charged the graduands to respect their colleagues  and patients, embrace professional development and identify with an accredited facility for training.

In a welcome address, the President of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy, Dr Felix Odusanya represented by Dr Humphrey Okeke called on the inductees to familiarise themselves with the NSP and MRTBN professional code of ethics as due diligence, comportment, composure, high level of decorum, display of competence and professionalism will be required of them.

The Head of Department of Physiotherapy, Dr Patrick Ewah in a remark at the event commended the initiator of the Physiotherapy Programme at the University of Calabar, Prof Nneoyi Egbe, the Vice Chancellor who embraced the idea, Prof Zana Akpagu and the current Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi who provided the necessary support for the department to secure accreditation.

The Induction Lecturer, Dr Jovita Daniel of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), speaking on the topic,” Excelling in Your Chosen Profession” charged the inductees to possess core skills and knowledge of Physiotherapy, essential clinical skill, clinical internship and  Hands-on Experiences as well as interpersonal and Communication skills for patient care in order to succeed.

Other requirements that the Induction lecturer stated include adaptation to New Technologies, embracing of Evidence-Based Practice, Respect for Culture and Religious values , Time Management and delivery of Patient Centred care among others.

The Best Graduating Student,Iseh Ntah Chijindu Orji in a Valedictory Speech thanked lecturers of the department  for their unending guidance and unwavering inspiration , commended parents for their unshakable foundation and pledged on behalf of his colleagues to leave lasting imprints in the field of Physiotherapy.

Aside the Best Graduating Student, Onu Vitalis Chisom, Owali Ilem, Itam Solomon Ettah, Neboh Chidigbo and Peter- Dumbili also carted away several awards.
